Merge tags like *|FIRSTNAME|* (Mailchimp), {{ first_name }} (Liquid), or [first_name] (others) get replaced with each subscriber's actual data when the email is sent. Common merge tags: first name, location, last purchase, signup date, custom fields. Advanced merge tags can include conditional logic (if X show A, else show B).
