Metrics

Bounce Rate

Percentage of sent emails that couldn't be delivered.

Definition

Bounce rate includes hard bounces (permanent failures: invalid address, domain doesn't exist) and soft bounces (temporary: full mailbox, server unavailable). Industry-acceptable bounce rate is under 2%; above 5% triggers deliverability red flags. Hard bounces should be automatically suppressed by your ESP. Soft bounces over 3-5 retries get downgraded to hard.
